Matches week 39

Matches week 39

Unfortunately, we can't watch each others games anymore. So, we've asked the team to write a little story about their matches. This way we can still be there, somehow. Below you can read summaries of all Kroton matches that were played in week 39, so that you still have the feeling that you were there! Be sure to check this page regularly as it is often updated with new match summaries!

You can read the match summaries from last week (38) here!

Ladies 1

Saturday afternoon, September 26, D1 (almost complete again after luckily many negative Corona tests) started a grueling journey to Beijum. Our data analyst, ball carrier and also head navigation (thanks Luca) led us in a straight line to the home of Lycurgus. With the heating on, we started the match against Lycurgus D4. The other brother Donadon was present again to make D1 shine. And that's what we did when we look at the statistics: 90 points scored by Kroton against 89 for Lycurgus, great work! We will leave the other statistics aside for now. Like real diesels that we are we showed in the 4th set what we are capable of playing volleyball. It is a pity that no audience was allowed to be present to view this last set. We will work hard with the other statistics on Monday because next week there are 8 points to play!

Set 1 (25-23): Sanne, Vera, Antonia, Rebecca, Geanne, Anna, Josta

Set 2 (25-19): Natacha, Vera, Antonia, Carien, Geanne, Anna, Josta

Set 3 (25-23): Sanne, Merijn, Antonia, Carien, Gerbrig, Anna, Josta

Set 4 (14-25): Sanne, Merijn, Rebecca, Carien, Gerbrig, Anna, Josta

Lycurgus DS4 vs. Kroton DS1: 3-1

Ladies 3

After a tough bike ride for 8 ladies and a car ride from Eva, who was too early for a change, we were allowed to start warming up, but we couldn't get much warmer because the heating in Beijum was set quite high. When we showed our attacks during the warming up, the fear and confusion was already visible in the eyes of Lycurgus ladies 6, because when a team shows up with not one, but two Italian coaches, you already know that victory is hard to find. The Lycurgus team did their best, but Ladies 3 was simply unstoppable. With Janneke as an improvised middle player, a libero who even scores a point, and a data analyst on the side of the field, there was no way stopping us. The game ended with an indisputable 0-4 for Kroton.

Lycurgus DS6 vs. Kroton DS3: 0-4

Ladies 5

On Saturday we played against VC Grijpskerk/Brilmode Zuidhorn DS4. We played this team last year already, therefore we knew that this game would be a more challenging game than the weekend prior. We started off the set quite slowly and gave the opponents a 7-1 head start (how nice of us), although the start was not as we would have wished, we quickly got ourselves into the game and started playing the way we usually play, eventually winning the first set 25-20. The second set started off much better, towards the end of the set we were winning 23-11, however, we lost a little focus which caused our opponent to catch up to 20 points, however, the last two points went to us and we also won this set. In the third set we changed up our rotation, the set also started well; we were warmed up, our heads were in the game, serving strong and giving our opponent a hard time playing the ball back, if we couldn’t smash the ball we made sure to place them somewhere in the backcourt to make it harder for our opponent to return it. In the last set, we were tired and were missing some balls we usually wouldn’t have, however after a quick timeout we gathered ourselves and started playing the way we wanted to, also winning this set.
This game went very well for us and it was definitely a confidence booster for the coming games.

Set 1 (25 - 20): Celia, Janine, Ilse, Manouk, Malin and Maren
Set 2 (25 - 20): Celia, Janine, Ilse, Manouk, Malin and Maren
Set 3 (25 - 17): Celia, Fea, Ilse, Floor, Malin and Maja
Set 4 (25 - 19): Celia, Janine, Fea, Floor, Malin and Maja

VC Grijpskerk / Brilmode Zuidhorn DS4 vs. Kroton DS5: 0-4

Men's 2

Men’s 2 went on an adventure to defeat VC Grijpskerk/Brilmode Zuidhorn HS1, and that’s exactly what they did. However, it was easier said than done since our opponents were tough and had a strong defense. We started of a bit rocky as we played at their pace and our concentration wasn’t A1 and thus resulting in a 25-18 loss. The next set the same mistakes seemed to occur and we were losing 18-12, however, a time out called by Maarten van der Braber changed everything. Our focus was 10/10 causing us to be in sync with each other and coming back with the W of 23-25. The same dynamic was carried onto the next set in which we won 20-25 and then again in the last set when we reached 22-24. We realised we were close to winning and sealing the deal and started to lose focus on our goal. This lead to the Grijpskerk/Brilmode Zuidhorn HS1 catching up 24-24 and brawl (not literally) took place, points were won back and forth up until the last point was awarded to us 26-28. Sike, a double foul was called making us replay the point, however the outcome didn’t change as with our (real) last point we shout out one of their outside hitters with a block and ending the game with 26-28.

Winning this game gave us the confidence that we can win a lot more games this season, what we learnt is that our concentration is our key to succeeding.

VC Grijpskerk / Brilmode Zuidhorn HS1 vs. Kroton HS2: 1-3

Men's 1

Today we played in Beijum. We played against an old Krotonner: Remco. That was very nice! For the rest we didn't like the hall, Lian was playing good, the rest was sometimes ok, sometimes not. We won 0-4 so that's positive! The ref was distracting us a bit sometimes, so next time we would like an old grumpy male referee that we can yell to. Ladies 1 was cheering very well today. When can we cheer for you? Also some girlfriends gave us some nice support and off course a nice reward after the victory.

Big thanks to our coach Bart, he gets it better and better why Kroton is more fun than Donitas.

Lycurgus HS6 vs. Kroton HS1: 0-4
